Ukraine: Subotiv – Illinska Church

The spectacular Illinska Church in the tiny village of Subotiv was built in 1653 on the order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the hetman of the Cossack Hetmanate. (Subotiv was actually his birthplace). His body is buried inside. This is also the church featured on the 5 hrybna Ukrainian banknote. The whitewashed church and a stand-alone belltower occupy a hilltop with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Atrocious roads lead to this village but the church is worth a partial destruction of your automotive vehicle.
