USA/AZ: Grand Canyon NP – Elk

The forest surrounding the Grand Canyon National Park is literally packed with herds of elk, or more precisely Rocky Mountain Elks aka Cerbus elaphus nelsoni in Latin. Bull elk reach up to 700 lbs (320 kg). The elk herds live only on the south rim, in the ponderosa pine and pinyon-juniper forests on the South Rim of the park, and are actually not native to Arizona. They all come from 303 individals introducted to the state from 1913-1928 from Yellowstone National Park.
