USA/UT: Capitol Reef NP – Waterpocket Fold

The central feature of the Capitol Reef National Park is the Waterpocket Fold – an actual monoclinal fold lasting for over 100 miles and its spiky white domes spine resembling the skyline of Washington DC. This geological flexure (an S-shaped fold of the strata) is the largest of its kind in the United States. The road goes through the heart of the park with spectacular-colored sandstone cliffs and white domes on both sides. On the opposite side of the Waterpocket Fold, the scenery is even more otherworldly – consisting of single standing isolated yellow mesas.
