Pitcairn: Coconut Crabs
There is hardly any native flora or fauna left on Pitcairn, but one of the representatives is the coconut grab. The crab is the biggest land crab species in the world but they are quite small here in Pitcairn if compared to the giants from the Christmas Island or Vanuatu (this is what happens when you travel a lot – you compare). There are no seashells on Pitcairn so young crabs actually use coconut shell as their temporary home making a “coconut crab in a coconut”. One needs to handle these guys carefully as they can easily chop off you finger win their strong claws.
