Gabon: Loango NP – Barracuda Fishing
Loango is famous for fishing and especially for barracuda which can reach massive sizes here. A couple of hours in the lagoon and I reeled it two specimens – looked large to me but apparently below average by local standards. Barracudas are like piranhas of salt water – formidable jaw with huge teeth all of different sizes, ready to devour anything in sight. Barracudas can reach 43 km/hr speeds in short bursts while pursuing their pray, and have been known to attack people in the water. When hooked, the fight they put up is tremendous! And taste great later as tartar.
