Angola: Pedras Negras of Pungo Andongo
Pedras Negras means “Black Rocks” in Portuguese. Pedras Negras of Pungo Andongo is a truly stunning geological formation that is worthy of a UNESCO list or “top places to see on Africa”. A plateau of massive rocks of uncertain geological origin towers above the surrounding savanna and can be seen for miles away. Getting here is long and arduous but well worth it, especially after you climb to the top of rocks for a panoramic view of the surreal lunar landscape. Everything here is unique and endemic – plants are strange and weird, rocks are peculiar and bizarre (it almost felt like I was back to Roraima in Venezuela). The rocks are sedimentary conglomerates that were formed under pressure and then uplifted, but they look absolutely out of character compared with the surrounding green and flat savanna, and the scientists are still debating what exactly happened here. A truly amazing place and nobody known about it!
