Bosnia & Herzegovina: Travnik
Another town with a medieval fortress – Travnik – is equally stunning in its medieval beauty and location to the nearby Jajce. Travnik has more of Ottoman influence then other towns in Bosnia as this was for a period the capital under the Ottoman rule and many mosques and Ottoman architecture buildings were built during this period. The mighty Ottoman-style fortress stands above the town with thick walls and ramparts overlooking the panorama of the town and many spiky minarets. For a second, it felt I was in the Middle East or North Africa and not Europe. Also, it’s an interesting fact that the football coach of the 1998 Croatian team that made it to the third place in the World Cup was from Travnik.
