Serbia: Subotica
And last but not least Serbian post – the absolutely lovely and funky town of Subotica not far from the Hungarian border. This must be the Serbian version of Barcelona’s Gaudi – the entire town is packed with art nouveau buildings and architecture, the only such town in the country. It’s like being in a total fairytale – the main Cathedral of St Theresa has ice-cream-cone-like rooftop and decorations, many buildings rival Barcelona’s masterpieces – like Reichel Palace or Municipal Library. Even the synagogue is completely art nouveau – like Alice in Wonderland architecture just with stars of David in top. Interestingly, Subotica had over 200 different names throughout its long history and various rules like Serbs, Austrians, Turks, Hungarians, and a sovereign independent state.
