Hungary: Esztergom

Esztergom stands on high ground above Danube overlooking Slovakia to the north. This is one of the most important towns in Hungary for it is the seat of the Roman Catholic Church in the country. The largest church in Hungary – the Esztergom Basilica – stands next to the medieval castle on a hill above the old town. The basilica was built in the late 19th century in a strict classicist style and is just humongous inside and out. The decorations are both austere in their detail and lavish in the amount of gold at the same time. The dome rises to 72m /235 feet above a massive altar. And outside the church and the Castle – there are plenty of statues both religious and historical.
