Ukraine: Drogobych
The town of Drogobych is a true gem in the western Ukraine. Dating back to 11th century it was a major trading post between Kievan Rus and Europe. At various points in its history under Poland and Austro-Hungary it accumulated vast riches as it for a period was the number one oil production town in the entire Europe as well as having the largest and oldest salt mines on the continent. Unfortunately, years under Soviet rule didn’t help the preservation of all the historical treasures – but plenty still remain. The beautiful bell tower of the snow-white Townhall in the central square offers panorama of the entire town. There is also the 14th gothic St-Bartholomew Church, 16th century wooden Church of the Holy Cross, several castles, churches and monasteries, and a lot of centuries-old beautiful architectural trading houses.
