Ukraine: Drogobych – Wooden St George’s Church
There are two wooden churches in Drogobych, and the larger one – St George’s Church – is a UNESCO World Heritage listed absolute masterpiece, unlike anything I have ever seen before! It is one of the oldest and best preserved wooden churches in the entire Central Europe and the Carpathian Mountains. The churches was founded around 1500, and actually had a church within a church on the second level. Interestingly, the church was originally located about 40km from Drogobych, but was purchased for a barrel of salt and transported to its current location. The entire interior is covered with absolutely stunning frescoes. The frescoes are all original and extremely vivid and elaborate, depicting various biblical scene. My neck starting hurting staring at all this in absolute awe.
