Bahamas/Eleuthera: Governor’s Harbor
Governor’s Harbor in the middle of Eleuthera is the largest town on the island and its capital. In fact, it was here that a group of British settlers led by Captain Sayle and known as Eleutherian Adventurers landed in 1648 and established a settlement Eleuthera (after Greek word for freedom), with the hope of creating the first democracy in the Western Hemisphere (nearly 130 years before USA). That didn’t really pan out and the island and the entire Bahamas became British. Governor’s Harbor is very beautiful, overlooking a nearly circular harbor of blue water. There are many historic centuries-old Victorian buildings – church, old library, and many mansions.
