North Macedonia: Cruising on Lake Ohrid
Lake Ohrid is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s unique from both natural point of view (it’s one of the deepest lakes in Europe with its own ecosystem and 200 endemic species) and its shores are dotted with ancient Christian churches. It lies between North Macedonia and Albania and both countries have designated the shores as national parks. Not that you feel that in the town of Ohrid which is the beach destination for the landlocked North Macedonia as well as seemingly half of Eastern Europe – Serbian, Russians, even Germans – turn it into a summertime zoo. Nevertheless, cruising on the lake is a must-do first thing as a general introduction – you get to see the beautiful town of Ohrid from the water with the fortress and churches in the skyline, faraway mountain ranges, Albania across the lake, and even the summer villa of the former Yugoslavian leader Tito.
