Brazil: Rio de Janeiro – Favela Da Rocinha
Rio Favela: I ventured on a trip into Rocinha favela (with an organized tour). Rocinha is the largest favela in Brazil with over 100k living in multi-stories houses clinging to cliffs. Favelas are mostly controlled by drug lords and are off limits to police. People make around $150 a month and get their electricity and cable by basically siphoning it from utility company (cables everywhere). It’s not safe except on a tour. Sewer water runs trough streets, that chicken run in, and later are sold as food. People are poor but happy, caipirinha sold in every bodega, and samba blasting from every window.
