Greece: Athens – Exploring Athens
Having in depth explored the ancient sites of the Greek capital on the previous trip, I just roamed through the center of the city, finding hidden Byzantine churches, grand modern cathedrals, views of the ancient ruins and the Syntagma Square. Syntagma is the center of Athens – the large marble square is in front of the Greek Parliament. A few block down from there is the grand Metropolis Cathedral of Athens, the main church in the country built in 1842. Just next to it is the tiny Agios Eleftherios with beautiful fresco dating to 12th century. Further in town is yet another gem of the very famous Byzantine Kapnikarea Church from 1050! It’s dwarfed by more modern buildings surrounding it.
