Germany: Hedeby Viking Site
The present day northern Germany used to be an important Viking territory with some of the major settlements around the town of Hedeby (or Haithabu in German). The Viking village existed here in the 6-9th century, was abandoned and then rediscovered much later in the 19th century by archaeologists and excavated. Fast forward to today – there is a museum displaying the Viking artifacts, an old Viking ship, and a little further there is a restored village where German actors pretend to be Vikings. This is not one but two UNESCO World Heritage Sites…. and frankly they are boring and pathetic and should not be as such. Not to be dismissive of Vikings but places like these are probably incomparable to some of he other world treasures that are way more worthy of recognition then this.
