Nizhniy Novgorod Oblast: Nizhniy Novgorod – Kremlin
The core of the historic Nizhniy Novgorod is the Kremlin, a fully fortified area dating back to the middle of the 14th century. At that time, the city was a border town, guarding Russia against the Tatar-Mongol invasions from the east. The Kremlin has further built and fortified into a massive fortress with 2km of wall and 13 towers. The entire complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site and part of it is a military museum.
