Australia: Canberra – Australian War Memorial
The Australian War Memorial is undoubtedly the main attraction in Canberra. It’s huge, built like a Byzantine cathedral, and has a massive collection of artifacts inside and military equipment outside. It painstakingly covers the history of Australia involvement in both WWI and WWII, every battle and campaign and military intervention or defensive act. A lot of machinery is also inside – airplanes, vehicles, boats, guns. There is a lot of Nazi stuff as well, with some halls full of uniforms and tanks with swastikas on them. One particular map of the WWII I found rather annoying – depicting all the battlefronts of Europe and Africa with over a dozen in the Western Europe and one tiny little star on the Eastern Front. Pardon my French – but that’s total bullshit. I guess everyone prefers history that suits them.
