Austral Islands/Rurutu: Tour de L’Iles Festival
Somehow, I happened to be on Rurutu during the local annual festival – Tour de L’Iles – which literally means tour of the island. Everybody decorates their cars with flowers and coconut palm branches and drives around the entire island, stopping at all of the three settlements to dance. Seemingly every vehicle on the island is part of the procession, led by a fire department truck and accompanied by another fire department vehicle in the end. Since some of the roads are one lane gravel paths, it creates quite a clusterfuck!
