Socotra: Zaheg Dunes
One of the most famous and spectacular places in Socotra are the massive sprawling Zaheg Dunes further along the southern coast. The Shaab Escarpment is visible in the distance from the dunes and is mostly responsible for sand accumulating beneath it from the prevailing southern winds. Somewhat reminiscent of the White Sands National Park in New Mexico, the dune fields here are massive and some of the tallest dunes rise over 100ft. It takes a serious effort to hike up and down these sliding white sand mountains, but the views from the top toward the dark blue seas and light blue skies are truly stunning and panoramic.
