Ukraine: Kostryna – Church of the Intersession
And back to some more wooden church exploration to the tiny village of Kostryna in the far west of Ukraine, close to Slovak border. The church was built in 1761 in a hull above the village with panoramic views of the Carpathian mountain ranges in the distance. The church is interesting because it combines two different wooden church architectural styles – Boyko and Lemko. The large dominant central tower above the nave is a feature of Boyko design, while the three towers descending in height from the bell tower above the entrance area are characteristic of Lemko style. The church is absolutely beautiful with a set of wooden stair switchbacking up the hill toward it. There is also a free standing bell tower with half a dozen bells in it.
