Ukraine: Wooden Churches of Ukrainian Maramures
Maramures area in Romania is world-famous for its incredible orthodox wooden churches with very characteristic architecture. In Romania, the entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage sight with 8 churches inscribed. The modern Ukraine-Romania border run through the northern Maramures and several of these churches dot the Ukrainian side. We got to explore three of them – 1704 St Nicholas Church in Sokyrnytsy, 1668 Archangel Michael Church in Kraynikovo, and 1779 St Nicholas Church in Danylovo. The architecture is very unique and graceful with a single high tower reaching out to the sky with four small mini-towers near the top. The roof is also seriously oversized, larger then the body of the church, making them look like mushrooms.
