USA/WY: Yellowstone NP – Grand Prismatic Spring
Grand Prismatic Spring is beyond fantastic! It is the largest hot spring in the USA and third largest in the world. The spring pool has all the colors of the prism breaking the sunlight – red, orange, yellow, green, and blue – hence the name of Grand Prismatic Spring. The reds, oranges, yellows and browns are the results of the microbial mats that live in the hot environment of the springs. The deep and light blues in the middle of the spring are the actual water colors resulting from the clarity and depth variations of the water. The spring is around 370 feet (110 m) in diameter and is 160 feet (50 m) deep and discharges an 2,100 liters of 160 °F (70 °C) water per minute. A boardwalk takes you all around the spectacular area. If this isn’t another planet – I don’t know what is!
