USA/WV: Charleston – State Capitol
The State Capitol in Charleston, the capital of West Virginia, looks very similar to the Capitol inWashington DC. In fact, it’s five feet hires. It’s a shame that it was under heavy restoration, but nonetheless it was still impressive. It was constructed from 1924 to 1932, with more than 700 train carloads of Indiana limestone trucked here, white marble from coming from Vermont, and Italian travertine sheath flown from Italy. The massive building rises majestically above the banks of the Kanawha River. Supposedly, its 300-foot dome is entirely covered with 23.5-karat gold leaf. Statues of Stonewall Jackson and Abraham Lincoln coexist peacefully here.
