Turkey: Gallipoli Peninsula Battlefields Memorials
The Gallipoli Peninsula was the sight of brutal WWI battles and various war memorials and cemeteries are scattered all around it. On April 25 1915, the Allied forces of British, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, and French troops landed here to launch an attack on the Ottoman Empire, that was fighting on the Germany’s side. The 9-month campaign resulted in 130,000 dead and 500,000 wounded and the ultimate victory of the Turks under the command of Mustafa Kemal, who later became the founder of the modern Turkey as Ataturk. Memorials on the Gallipoli Peninsula commemorate both sides of the war.
