Tanzania: Bagamoyo
Bagamoyo was a major trading port in the 17-18th century as caravans of ivory, salt, copra, and slaves travelled from here to Zanzibar and beyond. Many famous European explorers, including Richard Burton, Henry Morton Stanley and David Livingstone, began and ended their great trips here. From the late 19th century, Bagamoyo became the capital of the German East Africa. The central Bagamojo is famous for its own Stone Tone (just like the one on Zanzibar), with many crumbling colonial building, plenty of Islamic carved doors, a massive abandoned German Boma (government building, a lighthouse and much more. The town is also famous for traditional shipbuilding – dhow. Bagamoyo in on the UNESCO World Heritage waitlist.
