Kenya: Tsavo East NP – Scarab Beetles & More Night Wildlife
At night, hundreds and hundreds of scarab beetles of all sizes and shapes came out at the Voi Safari Lodge at the Tsavo East national park in search of light. It was just totally insane – massive beetles flying around like helicopters and hitting you in flight. Upon close examination, it turned out there were several different species of beetles, from giant Egyptian-Lila scarab dunk beetles to absolutely surreally-looking rhino-beetles with giant protruding horns. We held them and played with them until a massive red spotting cobra was spotted doing the same just within feet of us. That’s where the party quickly ended (red spitting cobras are highly venomous, possibly deadly, and spit venom into your eyes from several meters away, permanently blinding you).
