Mexico/Jalisco: Tequila – Exploring the Town
The town of Tequila is an attraction in itself and is listed as a Pueblo Magico in Mexico. Indigenous people who lived here always used the hearts of the abundant agave plants to make fermented drinks. When the Spanish arrived in 1540, they established a monastery here and eventually further distilled the fermented drink and a new alcoholic beverage was born. The first large-scale distillery was created in 1600 and famous tequila houses followed soon thereafter – La Rojeña Jose Cuervo in 1795. La Constancia in 1823, Tequila D’Reyes in 1840, Sauza in 1873, and Orendain in 1879. The town has a beautiful Church of Santiago Apostol next to the central square and a lot of places to try and drink tequila. Tequila is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
