Mexico/Veracruz: Alvarado
Here’s another interesting small town in the state of Veracruz. The town, founded in the 16th century by the Spanish Pedro de Alvarado, who named the town and also the river for himself (conveniently). Alvarado is beautifully located on the shore on one side and on the river on the other side, making it almost an island. The town is sleepy with a beautiful central square with stunning colonial architecture, monuments, church, and old palaces and mansions, plus a lot of monuments. No tourists, no tourist shops, everything quiet and quaint.
