Romania: Humor Monastery
Next painted monastery – Humor. This one is one of the oldest of the UNESCO-listed painted churches and perhaps one of the most spectacular. It dates to 1530 – nearly 500 years old!! It’s smaller compared to others, but it was the first to be painted inside and outside with elaborate frescoes and they are all in perfect original and restored condition. The frescoes cover the Siege of Constantinople and the Last Judgement. The main painter – Toma of Suceava – replaced the Persians with the Ottomans in the siege scenes and painted his face on a soldier who battled the Ottoman army. This the monastery frescoes serves also political propaganda, portraying the Turks as the biggest enemy to both Moldavia kingdom and Christianity
