Romania: Sucevita Monastery
One more UNESCO painted monastery in Romania’s Moldavian Bukovina – Sucevita Monastery. It was built in 1585 and is one of the largest of the painted monasteries, with very large fortifications around (6m high walls that are also 3m thick!) and living quarters inside. Both interior and exterior walls of the church in the center of the clumping are covered by amazing fresco painting, that depict biblical episodes. The paintings date from around 1601, which makes Sucevița Monastery the last monastery to be decorated in the this style.
