Uzbekistan: Samarkand – Registan (Revisited)
Samarkand was the ancient capital of a large 14th century empire under Timur (Tamerlane) – covering a large part of today’s Iran, Iraq, and most of the Central Asia. Registan (a “sandy place” in Persian) is the center of the acient city and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of three spectacular madrassah buildings – the Ulugh Beg Madrasah (built in 1420), the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (from 1660), and the Sher-Dor Madrasa (dating to 1636), built between 1th and 16th centuries. The apotheosis of the Timurid architecture, blue tiled domes and walls, and exquisite exteriors and interiors are truly sights to behold.
