Saudi Arabia: Jazan – Turks’ Fortress
Another attraction in Jazan is a hilltop fortress – Turks Fortress – dating back to the Ottoman times and built to guard the important port and transit point on the outskirts of the massive empire. The square fort had classic Ottoman architecture with four massive towers on four corners, thick defensive walls and gates and even moat all around. The fortress is well-restored and the restoration is ongoing (like everything else in Saudi Arabia). Sitting in top of the hill, it’s the best spot to watch the sunset over the Red Sea to the west.
