Bahrain: Dulmun Burial Mounds
The tiny island of Bahrain contains burial mounds that are thousands of years old and though to have been the largest cemetery in the world in the ancient times. In some places in the center of Bahrain, the mounds form continues territories and fieldstone. It’s estimated that there are over 300,000 ancient burial mounds and spots on the island. The burials span several millennia from about 3000 BC to 550 BC, with most dating to the Dilmun civilization. Dilmun was an important trading center between Mesopotamia and the Arabian Peninsula and beyond, and Dilmun was mentioned in Sumerian scriptures as the Garden of Paradise (supposedly this was the inspiration for the Gardens of Eden). Dilmun Mounds are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
