UAE/Ras Al Khaimah: Massafi Fort
The inland portion is Ras Al Khaimah is also full medieval forts and one of the most spectacular is Massafi Fort. This early 19th century fort was built to protect an oasis at the foothills of the Al Hajar mountains and a trade route running through here. It’s a classic Arab fort with thick walls and round towers and wooden flimsy-looking staircases leading to the rooftop floors – can all be yours as there are hardly any tourists around whatsoever.
