Barbados: Bridgetown – Garrison District
There’s only one UNESCO World Heritage site in Barbados – the Garrison District Area. The area is relatively small and includes a horse racing track, military barracks of the St Ann’s Fort and an emblematic clock tower of the main guardhouse. For most of the 17-18th century this Garrison was the headquarters of the British West Indies military. It was also here that George Washington, the future leader of the American revolution, stayed for six weeks with his brother. Finally, in 1966, it was at the Garrison District that the Union Jack flag of Great Britain was lowered and replaced with the newly minted flag of the independent and sovereign Barbados (seemingly coinciding with the end of any infrastructure investment on the island).
