Tobago: Main Ridge Forest Reserve
he Main Ridge is the central mountain range running through the center of the Tobago island. The Main Ridge Forest Reserve is actually the oldest nature reserve not only in the Caribbean, but in the whole world, established back in 1776, when it was designated by the British as “Woods for the Protection of the Rains”, and left untouched since then! The reserve has many endemic plants and several bird species that can be found only here and nowhere else on earth. A hiking trail took us through the core of the reserve – beautiful flora and many birds along the way. This is a tentative UNESCO World Heritage site.
