The Butt of Lewis Lighthouse was designed and built in 1886 to help commercial ships navigate the treacherous waters at the northern tip of the Outer Hebrides, facing the onslaught of the rough Atlantic Ocean pummeling the shoreline in here with extreme ferocity. The lighthouse is 121 ft/31 m high, constructed out of unpainted red brick. The lighthouse was fully automated only in 1998. The coastline around here is spectacular as well with many cliffs and seastacks covered with various seabird species – guillemots, gulls, puffins, etc.
