Canada/Nova Scotia: Joggins Fossil Cliffs
Joggins Fossil Cliffs is world famous as a fossil site with astonishing amount of fossils from the Coal Age, about 100 million years before the dinosaurs. Back then, Nova Scoria was a tropical rainforest with giant trees and sea organisms – a lot of this got fully preserved in silt, including full tree trunks, leaves, shell fossils and so on. This is one of the premier fossil sites in the world and it was even mentioned in Darwin’s “Origin of Species”. The study of these fossils let the scientist discover that the Coal Age abruptly ended with a mass extinction event. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
