Canada/Ontario: Killaloe – Birthplace of Beavertails
he small town of Killaloe’s claim to fame is that the Canadian specialty pastry of beavertails was invented here. In 1978, a local couple sold their family recipe pastry at a local fair, which was hugely successful. They later opened a permanent BeaverTails stand in town and a couple of years later another one in Ottawa’s Byward Market. The company took off and now there are 140 franchise locations in 6 countries. Beavertails are fried sweet flatbreads (that are supposed to look like the tails of beavers) with various toppings, from maple syrup to cinnamon to fruits and so on, an authentically Canadian dish.
