Canada/Quebec: Montreal – Old Port & Sailors’ Clock Tower

Old Port of Montreal lies right in front of the historic old town of the city and has been used as a port since 1611, when French fur traders built a trading post here. A full-size commercial port was built in 1830 and closed in 1976 when a much large port was built downstream on St Lawrence River. The iconic Sailors’ Memorial Clock Tower aka Montreal Clock Tower was built here in 1922 at the very tip of the little island on the river, rising 45 m (148 ft) above city. More a memorial tower then an actual watch tower, it was built right at the supposed entrance into the city and commemorates Canadian seamen who fought in WWI.
