Sudan: El Kurru Archaeological Site
El Kurru is the site of the first of the three royal cemeteries of the kings and queens of the Nubian Kingdom of Kush, dating back to 860-650 BC. There are several dozen early Nubian pyramids and quite a few tumulus – a burial that is flat on the surface but goes deep underground for a spectacular chamber tomb. Many tombs are not open to public, except for a few, where you can descend into underground rooms. One of them, the Tomb of the Tanutanami is absolutely surreal, with paintings of Egyptian/Nubian gods and ceremonies covering walls and ceiling in insane detail and state of preservation.
