Peru: Marasha Reserve – Proboscis Bats
We found some of the most bizarre bats at the Marasha Natural Reserve – Proboscis Bats (Rhynchonycteris naso). While there are nearly 150 species of bats in the Amazon (including vampires), this particular species is quite unique and the only member of its family – they are very distinctive looking with elongated noses, thick patchy fur, and spotted appearance – so it was more or less easy to identify them (a budding biologist in me is proud). These small bats are nocturnal and insectivores, and extremely cute!
