Peru: Amazon Pink River Dolphins
Amazon is famous for its pink river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) that live in the freshwater river. They actually are a species of toothed whales and not dolphins, although the size is more similar to the latter. They have pink underbelly and a bulbous head. Unlike dolphins, pink dolphins rarely jump out of the water and just surface every 5-6 minutes for a quick breath of air. They are very difficult to photograph. But we had several surface quite close to the boat, one was a bother with a cub. Interestingly, pink river dolphins aren’t the only dolphins in the Amazon, there are also grey dolphins, which are true dolphins, and we saw a couple of them as well.
