Slovakia: Calvaria at Banska Stiavnica
Outside of the town of Banska Stiavnica lies a unique complex of churches – a Calvaria built by a Jesuit order. It’s the most outstanding Calvary (a complex of churches and crosses) in the entire Europe and the most inisual location – it’s built on top of a volcanic lava plug rising very steeply from the plain. There 22 chapels and 3 churches all chronicling the life of Jesus. As you climb up the hill (and it’s steep as it can be), the going gets harder and harder, meant to resemble the bearing of the cross. Is a very unique religious complex and I doubt there is any similar anywhere else.
