Uganda: Lake Victoria – Lake Cruising at Sunset
Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest and world’s second largest freshwater lake by area (although it’s only 9th largest by volume, hence it’s pretty shallow. The lake supports fishing communities along its shores, but it’s seriously overfished as net fishing predominates all over and many native species are almost gone and nonnative also significantly reduced. The shores are covered by boggy terrain with papyrus reeds, water hyacinth, and various aquatic grasses. Many small and large islands lie offshore, and many papyrus islets are floating around (the latter are artificially made by fishermen to lure the few remaining fish and then net them). The birdlife is prolific and there are massive colonies of egrets all congregating in small islands at sunset – an unbelievable sight!
