Austria: Skiing at Solden
And the final Austrian skiing post – Solden! Solden easily rivals Lech/St Anton for high altitude beautiful alpine mountain skiing. Solden village itself is somewhat reminiscent of Zermatt in Switzerland – ski town stuck in a dead-end Otz Valley surrounded by very steep mountains and a nearly perfect triangular peak towering right above it. To ski here – you take multiple cable cars to get high above into the glacial plateau where two massive glaciers, Rettenbach and Tiefenbach, combine at above 3,000 meters. Here you can go nuts on 144km of wide-open well above tree line intermediate slopes and few steep but wide black runs. The mountain panorama goes 360 and as far as the eyes can see – you are in the very heart of the Austrian Alps – and Switzerland and Italy are easily visible from here.
