Hawaii/Big Island: Akaka Falls

Akaka Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls on the rainy eastern side of the Big Island north of Hilo. The water is part of a larger state park – plunges an impressive 442 feet (135 meters) into a lush gorge below, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Hawaii. The water explodes in a sheer vertical drop off a steep cliff. In Hawaiian culture, Akaka Falls is revered as a sacred site and is said to be inhabited by a mythical mo’o (dragon) guardian. The waterfall is truly impressive as is the rainforest lush jungle full of greenery and wildflowers along the trails leading to the falls.
