Hawaii/Big Island: Saddle Road & Waimea
We drove a full loop around the Mauna Kea mountain in the big island – lots of spectacular panoramic wide open spaces and views. In the Waimea side – it’s open grasslands and the largest ranch in the USA – located at roughly 2,600 ft (800 m) above sea level with a cooler and drier climate. The saddle road run through the middle of the island between the towering Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa – we got lucky to see both. Finally, descending into the Hilo area, you enter the low clouds and ever-present rain and fog.
