Guadeloupe: Le Moule
Le Moule is located on the northeastern side of Guadeloupe and dates back to 1635 and the arrival of the French. This was one of the major sugar ports during the colonial times and also the residence of choice for the French aristocracy in the island.the city’s infrastructure was improved with an extensive breakwater and hence the French name – Le Moule. The city had the rights to trade directly with France – and sugar cane, coffee, cotton, cocoa, and spices made the local farmers and traders quite rich – you can still see some of the mansions and houses around the main square, as well as the Church of Saint Jean Baptiste, constructed in the form of a Latin cross. The waterfront has remains of a fort. Le Moule is quite exposed to the eastern winds and has been hit by multiple hurricanes over the years.
